Special Note Regarding FCP 7
Does UserMatic™ work with Final Cut Pro version 7?
Yes, UserMatic™ has been designed to store all user preferences data for FCP7, in just the same way it has for prior versions. You do NOT need to upgrade for this capability.
But my old FCP6 profiles don't seem to show up now in FCP7.
That's correct. Unfortunately, our testing has shown that — unlike most modern-day applications — Apple does NOT migrate existing (i.e., FCP6) preferences so that they're “brought forward” into the latest version (FCP7).
In other words, while UserMatic will still dutifully continue to manage your old FCP6 preferences data ... Final Cut Pro 7 itself blithely ignores it. This is a design limitation on Apple’s part (and disappointing, as it effectively amounts to a loss of user data).
Thus, the basic result is that you’d need to
recreate your user preferences data from scratch
for FCP7.
This was not a decision on EditGroove’s
part.
Is there at least a workaround for converting older FCP6 settings?
Understandably, you might prefer to try to convert your old FCP6 preferences to FCP7, and we can suggest a potential workaround. Please note, however, that since this is undocumented and unsupported by Apple, the results cannot be guaranteed. To be safe — and at regular intervals anyway, and certainly whenever you make significant changes to your system — we urge you to back up your FCP project data as well.
(For some specific tips on how to do this,
there's a special discussion on this very topic: on
the
Workflow Junkies podcast, episode #13.)
Next:
1) Make sure you’ve Quit out
of FCP.
2) Run UserMatic. Press the
‘Backups’ button to back up your existing profiles
library.
3) Now, press Apple-F to reveal
the Library containing your profiles.
4) Double-click on the
‘Profiles’ folder.
Now, within each individual profile whose
settings you want to bring forward into FCP7:
5) Change the name of the file
called “Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs” to “Final Cut Pro
7.0 Prefs”.
Finally:
6) Return to UserMatic, and
Load the desired profile into FCP.
7) Launch FCP. You should see
your old FCP6 layout appear within FCP.
This does appear to work; however, if you do encounter any problems, it would be prudent to Trash FCP’s preferences, and then customize them again from scratch.
